The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Safe Routes To Schools program makes over $600 million in funds available to implement projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic in the vicinity of schools. Eligible activities include upgrading signs, road markings, using safety devices and education programs.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a legitimate federally funded program created by a special provision of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act--A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).
