Safe Routes Funding


 

Each State administers its own program and develops its own procedures to solicit and select projects for funding. The program establishes two distinct types of funding opportunities for K-8 schools: infrastructure projects (engineering improvements) and non-infrastructure related activities (such as education, enforcement and encouragement programs). All funds obtained by an organization must be spent in the following ways:

1) Between 10% and 30% of the funds must be spent on public awareness and educational campaigns.

2) Between 70% and 90% of the total state funds must be spend on actual project planning and construction activities that will improve the ability of children to walk to school.

Because each state administers its own program, and most states now have a key point of contact, a Safe Routes to School State Coordinator.
